Exercise and load up on veggies
From Houston Chronicle; The federal government's
latest, science-based eating and fitness advice - aimed for the first time at
attacking the country's severe obesity problem - stresses what people already
know deep in their hearts: Eat heaps of vegetables and exercise several hours a
week. [url=http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/2990203]Read full

Popcorn: Good News, Bad News
From ediets.com; Aaaaaaahhhhh.... there's nothing like
the aroma of fresh-made popcorn. Whether you still make it in a pot with a little
oil, over the stove burner in one of those expandable aluminum Jiffy Pop
contraptions, or like the majority of us too-hungry-to-wait-or-fuss folk, in the
microwave, popcorn is more American than apple pie and Chevrolets.
Not
only is popcorn a snack food staple (the average American eats about 60 quarts a
year), but it's a great dieting food. Or so we're told.

Schools get good response from healthy alternatives
From Buck's County Courier Times;
Ask 7-year-old Eddie Thompson what his favorite food is, and the answer might be
unexpected.
"Tomatoes," he says matter-of-factly. "They're good for you
and they taste good."
Madison Sendlock has two favorites - peas and tomato
soup. "I just like them," she says with a shrug.
Some of their classmates
at Oxford Valley Elementary in Falls share similar tastes. Of eight first-and
second-graders asked the favorite food question, six named a vegetable. One girl
answered sushi, a rice-based dish that often includes seafood and vegetables.

Fad dieting is no substitute for patience
From Metro Pulse Online; Just once I'd like
to enter the New Year in something other than my fat clothes. But I admit that I
go into Thanksgiving knowing they are in my closet, that Dec. 31 and the
post-holiday diet are just around the corner.
So, as tradition demands, I
will resolve to try to lose the "Holiday 10" by late February. That's 1-2 lbs a
week that shouldn't come back until holidaze '05. Weight lost faster than that
tends to come back quite easily. As a friend says, "Weight loss means wait loss,"
meaning that patience is key to a successful weight loss diet.

Low-carb diets not a piece of cake
The Daily Star Online Reports; There are days when it
seems as if - at least according to the advertising hype - everyone is following
a low-carb diet to some extent.
But, a new survey from a marketing group
in Port Washington says that isn't the case. In fact, the study from the NPD
Group said, fewer people are following a low-carbohydrate diet... "They’re very
difficult to stick with for a very long time."

Benefits of a varied diet
From The Hindu; Recently, I spent a few hours touring
Laverstoke Farm - a 2,500-acre organic farm in Hampshire, southern England, run
by the ex-Formula One king of speed Jody Scheckter. After a delicious lunch, I
was packed on my way with a box of organic vegetables.
I spent the next
few days working my way through the considerable quantities of leafy greens. By
the end of the week, I started to wonder what to do with the remaining stack of
vegetables. With the temperature taking a downward turn, I resolved to convert
them into a wintry vegetable soup.

Sticking to diet....most important factor for losing weight
From Medical News Today; A
comparison of four popular diet plans finds that the key to losing weight may not
be which diet plan a person picks, but sticking with the plan that is chosen,
according to a study in the January 5 issue of JAMA. The study also found that
popular diets can be effective for modest weight loss and reducing several
cardiac risk factors, but overall adherence rates were low.
